Have you heard? Mazda Motor Corporation just introduced SKYACTIV™-VEHICLE DYNAMICS. It's a series of new-generation vehicle motion control technologies. The first technology in the series will be G-Vectoring Control. It will be introduced across Mazda’s entire model range. The first vehicle to feature it will be the Mazda Alexa. The Axela is known as Mazda3 here in the United States. The updated Mazda Axela is already on sale in Japan. The first North American application will come later this year in the 2017 Mazda6. As part of the SKYACTIV™ Technology suite, SKYACTIV™-VEHICLE DYNAMICS will supply integrated control of the engine, transmission, chassis and body to enhance the car’s Jinba Ittai feel. This is Mazda's term for the sense of connection between car and driver. This is a feature that distinguishes Mazda vehicles. It sets them apart from the competition. G-Vectoring Control (GVC) is a product of Mazda’s human-centered development philosophy. It's implementing the novel idea of using the engine to enhance chassis performance. Mazda has designed the world’s first control system to vary engine torque in response to steering inputs. In turn, this provides integrated control of lateral and longitudinal acceleration forces. It also optimizes the vertical load on each wheel. This makes for smooth and efficient vehicle motion. This is fancy talk for making the internal components of a vehicle work together to produce a car that drivers will LOVE! GVC will be of benefit to drivers of all skill levels. It will also be useful in a wide range of situations. It is a highly versatile system adaptable to vehicles of any class and drive type. The only requirements are a SKYACTIV™ engine. It was announced that two Mazda vehicles have won two more awards! The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster and the 2016 Mazda CX-3 subcompact crossover SUV both earned high honors from the New England Motor Press Association. The New England Motor Press Association journalists had the following to say about the Mazda MX-5 Miata, “Seeing a 20-year-old Miata with pop-up headlights is sure to make you smile. Mazda had a winner with the Miata right from Day 1 and has kept the celebration going.” The 2016 CX-3 was also honored with “Best-in-Class Sub-Compact SUV/Crossover” in the New England Motor Press Association "Winter Vehicles Award" category. There’s some great big news from Mazda North American Operations (MNAO)! It was recently announced that in an effort to better engage with customers, MNAO has launched a completely redesigned website! Mazda wants to be able to better assist car buyers through the research and car buying process. Better yet, Mazda doesn’t stop there. They also want to make sure they can better meet the needs of Mazda owners and improve their experience of customer service. The Vice President of marketing for MNAO Russell Wager had this to say about the website update: “As customer shopping behavior changes, Mazda customers of today are changing as well. While our customers continue to trend toward being slightly older than before, those buyers are more affluent and more tech savvy, making it imperative for us to meet them where they are.“ Mazda has redesigned their website to be more user-friendly. It features enhanced shopping tools and a seamless navigation process. The site was redesigned because Mazda realized that their customer’s shopping behavior has changed over the years. There’s a much stronger reliance on online research when a person is searching for a new vehicle. Because so many people are going online to search for their next vehicle Mazda developed an online platform that provides the most relevant information front and center. The links are prominent and easily accessible. There are less clicks to get to the shopping tools. Mazda has also made it easier for car buyers to build and price a vehicle online. Mazda is reaching milestones left and right! They recently announced that the total production volume of the Mazda3 reached 5 million units at the end of April 2016. The Mazda3 is also known as Mazda Axela in Japan. Can you believe this is the second Mazda to reach 5 million units of production? It's followed only by the Mazda Familia. The Mazda3 has also set another new record for Mazda. The Mazda3 achieved this milestone amount in less than thirteen years since production began in June of 2003. It's twelve years and ten months to be exact! Mazda has developed the Mazda3 to be a core model for the company. It accounts for approximately one third of the Mazda’s annual sales volume. Since the first generation was produced in 2003, Mazda has without fail worked to surpass expectations with the Mazda3. It has refined its dynamic design and given it a more responsive and enjoyable driving performance. Currently, the Mazda3 is in its third generation and was completely redesigned in 2013. At that time, Mazda included its SKYACTIV™ TECHNOLOGY and KODO "Soul of Motion" design for the new-generation lineup. It's been significantly acclaimed around the world.  The model has won Canadian Car of the Year’s Best New Small Car in 2013. The Mazda3 won the 2014 International Red Dot Design Award. Back in January, we talked about a Mazda Miata that had a ½ million miles all driven its original owner. Now Mazda has another “million” milestone to announce. As of April 22nd, 2016, production of the Mazda MX-5 Miata reached one million units! This 27-years-in-the-making record all started at the Ujina Plant Number One in April of 1989. In a recent press release, representative director, president and CEO of Mazda Corporation said “From the first generation through to today’s fourth-generation model, the reason we have been able to continue selling the MX-5 all these years is due to the strong support of fans around the world,” He continued “Mazda was founded in Hiroshima 96 years ago, and as we move toward our centennial year we will continue offering customers the joy of driving with this model, which has become a symbol of our brand. Mazda aims to create a special bond with customers and become a ‘one-and-only’ brand they will choose again and again.” Mazda wants to say thank you to the fans and owners. Mazda has something truly special planned just for them. The One-Millionth MX-5 Miata will be on display at special fan events in Japan. This special tour begins in May. It hits the United States in September. It will stop at different places around the country before making its final stop at the annual “ Miatas at Mazda Raceway” event. That event will be held at the beginning of October. There will be more information provided in the coming weeks. It’s pretty well known that Mazda offers some pretty cool cars for the road. But, are you aware of the long Mazda racing history? Mazda Racing: It all began way back in 1968 when two Mazda Cosmo 110 Sport Coupes were entered into the grueling 84-hour Marathon de la Route at the Nurburgring in Germany. The two Cosmo Coupes were running in fourth and fifth places in a field of sixty total race cars. In the 82nd hour, on Cosmo was damaged. The remaining Mazda Cosmo continued on to finish the race in a very respectable 4th place. It was only out-raced by pair of Porsche 911s and a Lancia Fulvia. It was an incredible feat  against the established opposition. At this point, the world knew the rotary engine had made its mark. Ten years later, in 1978, the Mazda RX-7 was born. It was quickly embraced by the motor racing community. Seeing its potential, Scottish racer Tom Walkinshaw entered the RX-7 into the extremely competitive British Touring Car Championship. With driver Win Percy at the wheel, the Tom Walkinshaw Racing Teach was victorious. They won the championship in both 1980 and again in 1981. What was even more impressive was the outright win in the 1981 Spa 24 Hours, driven by Pierre Dieudonne and Walkinshaw himself. In 1983, Mazda brought the racing team from Tokyo back to its headquarters in Hiroshima. This was done in an effort to help Mazda’s factory racing endeavors. It was also here that MAZDASPEED was created. The Mazda RX-7 was even more successful in the IMSA racing series. It took the top two spots in the GTU class on its 2nd outing in the Daytona 24 Hours in 1979. In response, the IMSA required the RX7s to carry extra weight. This caused them to miss the championship. However, when IMSA reversed its decision, Mazda won the manufacturers’ title in 1980. This turned out to be the beginning of a long period of dominance. This dominance even extended to the more powerful GTO class. By 1990, the RX-7 had won over 100 races. It had become the successful car in IMSA GT Championship history. Mazda is the only Japanese automaker to ever take overall victory in the Le Mans 24 Hour race. This happened in 1991 and is all thanks to the astounding Group C Mazda 787B. Two other Mazda teams also finished in the top 10 that year. The Group C cars were the fastest ever to race at Le Mans. Unfortunately, there was a change in racing regulations and rotary engines were banned from competing there. Unable to race Mazda's trademark rotary engine in the world's most renowned racing venue, MAZDASPEED began to focus on the business of motorsports. It began to develop and create aftermarket parts and accessories. In 1999, Mazda Motor Corporation took full control of MAZDASPEED. Since then, it has used its expertise to provide racing parts. It has also served as an umbrella for all of Mazda's motorsports activities. The natural extension of this was to serve the Mazda street enthusiast as well. MAZDASPEED has done just this with the enlargement of its parts catalog and now the introduction of MAZDASPEED -factory-engineered models sold in Mazda showrooms. Regular everyday drivers now have the ability to experience MAZDASPEED and Mazda racing for themselves. Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD (All Wheel Drive) makes the driving experience better in a so many ways! Even if a driver unexpectedly drives over a patch of snow, the i-ACTIV AWD system goes straight into action. This system can sense the change in traction the first moment the wheels hit the snow. The electromagnetic Active Torque Control Coupling immediately distributes torque. This helps to reduce wheel slippage. In essence, the i-ACTIV AWD helps the driver stay on his path. Thanks to the i-ACTIV AWD system, predictability can make a driver feel more spontaneous. This system is currently available in the Mazda CX-3 and the Mazda CX-5. It will also be available on the 2016 Mazda CX-9. Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD operates behind the scenes. It predicts road conditions based on key inputs from the vehicle. It automatically adapts to help the driver better navigate road conditions. The i-ACTIV AWD system works by using an electromagnetic clutch. This clutch instantly allots power to the front and rear wheels. It does this in accordance with the current conditions of the road surface and from the data the vehicle provides. The system continuously analyzes and forecasts the vehicle’s operating conditions. It takes into account everything like the outside temperature and windshield wiper use. It even uses the acceleration and braking patterns . The i-ACTIVE AWD system uses this information to predict when all-wheel-drive mode might be needed. It helps to deliver ideal traction BEFORE the wheels slip. This provides a much greater feeling of vehicle control. A confident driver is a good driver!
