This new engine will be the world's first commercial gasoline engine that uses compression ignition. The original Sustainable Zoom-Zoom vision was announced back in 2007. The future of powertrains is upon us. In fact, there’s a future Mazda to sport an innovative sparkless gas engine – the 2019 Mazda3. This model, slated for release in 2018, will feature the first-ever Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) technology, which has been in development for decades, but has yet to make its debut. Mazda is no stranger to developing innovative engines, as evidenced by its SKYACTIV™® technology, so its new HCCI technology should come as no surprise. HCCI engines function similarly to diesel engines. Engines with this new technology ignite without a spark thanks to compression, yet they run only on gasoline. Typically, gas engines rely on an ignition that sends electricity to spark plugs, which ignite fuel inside a combustion chamber. Efficiency is greatly enhanced and emissions reduced with HCCI engines, as a homogeneous mix of air and fuel burn at lower temperatures. In turn, this lessens the heat energy lost in typical gasoline engines. However, due to specific temperature needs for this technology to function properly, Mazda’s engine is said to incorporate sparkplug ignition capability, to be used as necessary when temperatures are too cold for the HCCI engine to start on its own. Mazda’s HCCI engine comes as part of the automaker’s next generation of SKYACTIV™ technology. Debut Details about Mazda’s HCCI technology will be revealed in the coming month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Rumor has it that Mazda will then introduce a concept of the redesigned Mazda3 in October at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Show. The new system will first hit the market in Australia, and drivers in the United States will likely have to wait until 2019 to access it, if Mazda decides to offer HHCI in the U.S. at all. The Mazda3 is currently the only car scheduled for HCCI engine use. Mazda recently announced that its turbocharged SKYACTIV™-G 2.5T engine has received a 2017 Wards 10 Best Engines award. This engine made its debut in the second-generation Mazda CX-9 midsize crossover SUV. Everyone knows that Mazda is at the forefront of  automotive technology. They didn't chase horsepower or torque figures. They knew those numbers would be unusable during normal driving. Engineers studied how SUV drivers would drive in the city. They opted for strong off-the-line acceleration in city traffic and linear, controllable operation. “There are lots of powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines out there, but Mazda’s 2.5-liter turbo stands out by using very elegant engineering to create especially smooth and abundant low-end torque for great everyday V-6-like performance in a sizable crossover SUV,” said WardsAuto Senior Content Director Drew Winter. By replacing a heavy V-6 engine with the SKYACTIV™-G 2.5T in the new-generation CX-9, Mazda was able to eliminate more than 250 lbs. By doing this, they improved EPA-estimated fuel-efficiency by 25% compared with its predecessor. Part of the motivation to rethink how to create the SKYACTIV™-G 2.5T came from the desire to improve real-world figures as well. Mazda developed a cooled exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) system. Thus, the engine runs at a higher compression ratio. It does this without needing to dump fuel into its cylinders for cooling. That's what commonly known as enrichment. “Most turbocharged gasoline engines use enrichment very early on, leading to fuel economy that rarely meets the EPA-estimated numbers,” said Hiraishi. “While the SKYACTIV™-G 2.5T’s cooled EGR doesn’t improve the catalog fuel economy numbers, it does pay dividends for customers to achieve greater real-world efficiency. Have you heard of the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association Show? Mazda put on quite the impressive show at the 2016 Specialty Equipment Marketing Association Show in Las Vegas, NV last month! They offered two concepts this year with the MX-5 Miata Speedster Evolution and the MX-5 RF Kuro. The MX-5 Speedster Evolution is lighter and what they describe as “ruthlessly efficient”. The MX-5 RF Kuro is based upon the 2017 MX-5 retractable fastback that’s going on sale in the U.S. early next year. MX-5 Speedster The MX-5 Speedster made its entrance to the automotive world at the 2015 SEMA show. It’s Mazda’s recognition and appreciation of the lightweight and no-frills driving experience of the sports cars of the 1950s. It weighs in at just over 2,000 pounds and its weight reduction thrust its performance and heightened the open-air experience for which the roadster is known. The MX-5 Evolution sharpens Mazda’s performance history. MX-5 RF Kuro Meanwhile, in Mazda’s new concept, the MX-5 RF Kuro, they have adopted many of the technologies that are seen in the MX-5 Global Cup vehicles. However, these are packaged in a more street-focused manner. The MX-5 RF Kuro shares it adjustable suspension with the MX-5 Global racecar. It also shares its Brembo dual-piston front brake calipers.
