Fuel Economy

Fuel Economy: Mazda Tops the List!

Everyone knows that Mazda makes a great vehicle. But did you know that they also make their vehicles fuel efficient. They care about our world and our environment too! Keep reading to learn how Mazda tops the list for fuel economy more Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends Report The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends Report this past January. In that report, the EPA named Mazda Motor Corporation as having the highest overall Manufacturer Fuel Economy for the 2016 model year. This is the fifth time in a row Mazda received the first place ranking. Environmental Protection Agency For this report, the Environmental Protection Agency compiled fuel economy trends by each model year sold in the United States. It ranks automakers by the Manufacturer Adjusted Fuel Economy. For Mazda, their overall fuel economy was 29.6 miles per gallon. This was an improvement of 0.4 miles per gallon over the previous year. SKYACTIV™ TECHNOLOGY One of Mazda’s main missions is to enhance people’s lives and improve society as a whole. Mazda believes this helps to preserve the beauty of the earth. They developed the SKYACTIV™ TECHNOLOGY which is a cutting edge array of engines, transmissions, car bodies and chassis. The company uses this technology throughout the Mazda vehicle lineup in order to provide all customers with both the driving pleasure they seek and the extraordinary environmental and safety performance. These accomplishments continue to play a key role in allowing Mazda to log the highest overall average fuel economy for five years in a row. For the Future For the future, Mazda aspires to develop a future in which people, the earth and society can live together with cars to enrich people’s lives through car ownership. That ownership will celebrate driving, which Mazda knows is highly important. It’s that unmistakable emotional connection that Mazda hopes to create. What is Mazda SKYACTIV™® TECHNOLOGY?

There are a lot of great options in the new Mazda lineup for Forestbrook drivers looking for a vehicle that delivers confident performance and strong fuel economy. That’s thanks in no small part to Mazda’s innovative SKYACTIV™® TECHNOLOGY suite, which includes a full range of carefully integrated engineering and design elements. We've touched briefly on what SKYACTIV™® TECHNOLOGY is in the past, but here we have a full rundown of what our lineup is capable of. Take a closer look at the many innovations that have gone into the development of SKYACTIV™® TECHNOLOGY, and experience its unique capabilities for yourself near Surfside Beach at Beach Mazda. Efficient Engines SKYACTIV™®-G - Mazda’s engineers have been at the forefront of a number of engineering innovations over the last several years, but the idea with SKYACTIV™®-G was to take the traditionally aspirated gasoline combustion engine to a new level of performance and efficiency. Offered in the form of 2.0L and 2.5L four-cylinder engines, SKYACTIV™®-G compresses the engine’s air-fuel mixture through the cylinders in a more efficient manner—at a rate of 14.0:1, to be exact—in order to get more energy out of less fuel. The result is a 15% increase in efficiency. You can currently find SKYACTIV™®-G engines at work on a variety of new Mazda vehicles, including the new Mazda3 and Mazda6. SKYACTIV™®-D - For a long time, the diesel engine was synonymous with pollution due to the high levels of toxicity in the exhaust. Mazda’s SKYACTIV™®-D engine puts those worries to rest while cashing in on the best performance elements of the diesel engine—including commanding levels of torque. How did Mazda’s SKYACTIV™® TECHNOLOGY engineers achieve better fuel economy and lower emissions levels? They developed an engine with a low compression ratio. This engine technology will be available on the first-ever Mazda CX-5 diesel. Responsive Transmissions SKYACTIV™®-Drive - Mazda’s SKYACTIV™®-Drive is a six-speed automatic transmission that combines the best aspects of the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), dual-clutch automated manual transmission, and traditional automatic transmission. The transmission’s lock-up range has been widened in order to develop a more efficient transfer of torque. This results in an improvement in fuel economy of 4-7% without compromising the level of responsiveness people are looking for between gear ratios of a sporty Mazda vehicle. SKYACTIV™®-MT - Mazda’s 6-speed manual transmission has been improved as well in the form of the SKYACTIV™®-MT. This sporty manual transmission provides sharp and swift gear shifts for a genuinely responsive feel. It is also compact and lightweight in size, which helps improve efficiency. Innovative Design SKYACTIV™®-BODY - The philosophy and primary goal behind the SKYACTIV™®-BODY is the same as that which went into the powertrain—namely, helping to deliver optimal performance and efficiency. Mazda’s design team achieved this by developing a body that was 8% lighter and 30% more rigid than the outgoing Mazda body design. The body structure has been straightened and made part of a continuous framework as well, which helps make it safer in a collision by distributing the force of the impact more evenly. SKYACTIV™®-CHASSIS - The Mazda SKYACTIV™®-CHASSIS included a full overhaul of Mazda’s outgoing chassis design, complete with a new front and rear suspension, electric power steering system, and a 14% reduction in weight over the outgoing generation. The result, as hoped for, is a vehicle that is functionally more comfortable at highway speeds and more agile at low- and mid-range speeds, as well as being more efficient and stable. SKYACTIV™®-VEHICLE DYNAMICS - Mazda’s SKYACTIV™®-VEHICLE DYNAMICS aren’t just a single element of design or engineering. Instead, it’s the entire integrated approach of SKYACTIV™® TECHNOLOGY realized. G-Vectoring Control improves handling—particularly when cornering—by delivering the proper amount of braking force and torque to the proper wheels based on driving behavior and conditions. These controls have been carefully calibrated based on specific technical analyses of the vehicle’s engine, transmission, body, and chassis. This provides more stability and responsiveness, resulting in a ride that is both more comfortable and engaging. off-road

Off-road Mode in 2017 Mazda CX-5: It's no Secret!

Off-road Mode? Off-road mode in a Mazda CX-5? “Off-road” and “Mazda” don’t usually end up in the same sentence. However, Mazda has really given us a super surprise hidden deep within the computer logic of the 2017 Mazda CX-5! The new off-road mode is a part of the i-ACTIV® all-wheel-drive (AWD) system in the 2017 Mazda CX-5. It’s designed for loose surfaces and deep rutted trails just off the beaten path. more All-Wheel Drive Mazda know it’s a challenge for the AWD system to know exactly how much torque to send to back wheels at every instant. Much of it depends on the condition of the roads. Are they slippery from a downpour? Has it been snowing? Is the road itself less than perfect? Is there any road to drive on at all? In order for the AWD system to get it right all the time, it must be able to sense the drive and the road in order to not lose traction. Traction control is a wonderful thing. But, what happens when you want to go off-road? Leaving the Pavement It’s possible that a crossover SUV like the 2017 Mazda CX-5 may never leave the road. However, Mazda knows that it’s not always the case. Sometimes families can go camping or just drive down a dirt road. The CX-5’s traction control will kick in, so what if you don’t want that to happen? According to Mazda: “In rare cases on uneven paths when a wheel could leave the ground, i-ACTIV AWD® will sense that wheelspin and lock the torque coupling so the front and rear wheels go the same speed." But on especially rough terrain, this might not be enough. Imagine a wobbly restaurant table with a matchbook wedged under its short leg to keep it from rocking. If you take that matchbook out, the air under that table leg is like the air under your tire in that diagonal twist. Now, what happens when the table rocks, and that leg comes down? The opposite leg goes up. The same thing happens in a diagonal twist. If one tire comes off the ground, the opposite tire also comes off the ground, or at least gets very light. What it Does So even if the torque coupling that drives power to the axles forces the front and rear tires go to the same speed, if one front tire and one rear tire are in the air, those airborne tires can still spin freely. To stop them, we have to use the traction control system to apply the brakes.  This stops tires from spinning, forcing torque over to the tires that are on the ground. In any other situation, we want the traction control system to apply the brakes as smoothly as possible, so there’s no interruption in the driver’s control of the car. But in situations where an abrupt power shift is necessary—like this diagonal twist off-road situation—pressing the “TCS OFF” button actually switches the CX-5 to a mode that simulates locking differentials via the brakes, sending power to the wheels on the ground.” So there you have it! The 2017 Mazda CX-5 has an off-road mode! Who knew?

next-generation

Next-Generation Platform from Mazda

Last month... we told you about Mazda's Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 initiative and the next-generation SKYACTIV™-X engine. This month, we begin with news about Mazda's next-generation platform for developing and building their vehicles. It's some pretty interesting stuff! Keep reading for details. You really should keep an eye on these developments. more Comfortable & Pleasing We know that Mazda designs their vehicles to be comfortable and pleasing to drive. They are very human-centered when it comes to production and design. This new generation platform was developed with an enhanced focus on that human-centered idea. The functioning of the tires, the suspension, body and seats were reviewed from the viewpoint of optimization. The new platform will offer improved comfort and a less tiring driving experience. It will also enable drivers to changes in their environment. This happens by optimizing the body's natural ability to balance itself. In turn, this creates the ultimate Jinba-ittai driving feel. You can read more about Jinba-ittai by tapping or clicking here. It's one of our really informative previous blog posts. Inside On the inside of the vehicle, seats have been redesigned to keep the pelvis upright. This maintains the natural S-curve of the human spine. The seat mounts and other parts are more rigid. This makes for smoother and quicker transmission of inputs form the vehicle to the driver's body. The vehicle frames have been improved as well. For one thing, the rigidness of the four-wheel diagonal is enhanced. This is because the frames are connected vertically, laterally, front and back. This creates a multi-directional ring structure. Outside & Underneath Mazda has also made improvements to the functional distribution to the suspension, tires, arms and dampers. Each part is now able to work interactively along the axis of the vehicle. This creates a very smooth control and energy transfer. The high-strain energy areas are damped with damping nodes, damping bonds and other damping structures. Of course, those structures will depends on the nature of the area they are in. Equally, these improvements are based on how people perceive sound. The "quality of quietness" is improved by controlling how noise changes over time or from different directions, of course. Sustainable

Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030: What is it?

What is Sustainable Zoom-Zoom? Mazda recently announced their new long-term vision for technology development. It's "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030". It looks ahead to the year 2030. Part of this new technology are plans to introduce a next-generation engine called SKYACTIV™-X in 2019. This new engine will be the world's first commercial gasoline engine that uses compression ignition. The original Sustainable Zoom-Zoom vision was announced back in 2007. Since then, Mazda has striven to offer environmental and safety performance as well as spectacular driving pleasure. This new vision will take a longer-term view. It sets out how Mazda will use driving pleasure to help solve issues facing people, the earth and society. more Mazda know its mission is to bring about a beautiful earth and enrich people's lives. They also want to help improve society. Mazda will always continue to develop ways to help inspire people through the value found in cars. SKYACTIV™-X SKYACTIV™-X will be the world's first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition. This means the fuel-air mixture ignites spontaneously when its compressed by the piston. The Spark Controlled Compression Ignition overcomes two issues that impeded the commercialization of a compression ignition gasoline engine. It maximizes the zone in which compression is possible. It also achieves a seamless transition between compression and ignition and spark ignition. This new engine will achieve outstanding environmental performance, power and acceleration performance. The Future Mazda certainly hopes to create a future where people, the earth and society can live side-by-side with cars that can enrich people's lives. Mazda already knows it's already possible to have a strong emotional bond with a vehicle. They wouldn't work so hard to develop safety and performance technologies if they didn't believe it. Of course, driving should be celebrated. Beach Mazda believes the same thing! Let us show you how awesome Mazda vehicles are. By all means, give us a call or stop by today!

2018 Mazda3

2019 Mazda3 to Feature Sparkless Gas Engine

The future of powertrains is upon us. In fact, there’s a future Mazda to sport an innovative sparkless gas engine – the 2019 Mazda3. This model, slated for release in 2018, will feature the first-ever Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) technology, which has been in development for decades, but has yet to make its debut. Find out more about the first Mazda to sport this innovative sparkless gas engine. What is HCCI? Mazda is no stranger to developing innovative engines, as evidenced by its SKYACTIV™® technology, so its new HCCI technology should come as no surprise. HCCI engines function similarly to diesel engines. Engines with this new technology ignite without a spark thanks to compression, yet they run only on gasoline. Typically, gas engines rely on an ignition that sends electricity to spark plugs, which ignite fuel inside a combustion chamber. Efficiency is greatly enhanced and emissions reduced with HCCI engines, as a homogeneous mix of air and fuel burn at lower temperatures. In turn, this lessens the heat energy lost in typical gasoline engines. However, due to specific temperature needs for this technology to function properly, Mazda’s engine is said to incorporate sparkplug ignition capability, to be used as necessary when temperatures are too cold for the HCCI engine to start on its own. Mazda’s HCCI engine comes as part of the automaker’s next generation of SKYACTIV™ technology. Debut Details about Mazda’s HCCI technology will be revealed in the coming month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Rumor has it that Mazda will then introduce a concept of the redesigned Mazda3 in October at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Show. The new system will first hit the market in Australia, and drivers in the United States will likely have to wait until 2019 to access it, if Mazda decides to offer HHCI in the U.S. at all. The Mazda3 is currently the only car scheduled for HCCI engine use. Pleasing

Pleasing to Drive: There's a Mazda made for you!

Great Lengths Mazda goes to great lengths to design vehicles that are not only technologically advanced and safe. Mazda vehicles are also very pleasing to drive. That's right. They are pleasing vehicles to drive. Let that sink in for just a moment. more Pleasing? Think about it... Have you ever thought about a vehicle just being pleasing to drive before? These design elements, known as sub-designs, are the little things some automakers take for granted. Mazda builds beauty into spaces that may very well go unseen by customers. Have you ever thought about how the seats fit your body just right? What about how the door handles feel to your fingertips? Maybe you chose your Mazda vehicle based on that that certain something you liked about it but just couldn't name. It wasn't some fluke or coincidence. No. Mazda builds their vehicles to make you happy. If you're not happy behind the wheel of a Mazda, something is seriously wrong! “Mazda’s designs are acclaimed, and every member of the engineering team was as eager as the designers to improve the appearance of functional parts and create the most beautiful overall design possible,” said Shinji Fujikawa, a member of the body CAD group. Designers made over 250 targeted improvements. For the new CX-5, this design process began in the initial stages of vehicle development. The team made small adjustments that resulted in a simpler surface and smoother lines. The result is what Mazda has described as "a variety of synergistic effects that create a cleaner look and an easier assembly process, all while reducing the pressure borne by the corners while driving." It's true that many of these improvement won't be noticed by drivers. But, the contribution to the appeal of Mazda vehicles will be. Drivers will feel it in the way their Mazda vehicle drives. They will notice it when they wash their vehicle or change a tire. Their vehicle will give them a certain something they may not be able to name, but they will know only Mazda has it.

Fifty Years

Fifty Years of Mazda History: Revolutionary Technology

Fifty Years It's been fifty years since a small Japanese automaker burst onto the scene with technology that everyone said could never happen. Mazda Motor Corporation, then called Toyo Kogyo Corporation, knew their new technology would be revolutionary. It had to be. more Toyo Kogyo Corporation The Toyo Kogyo Corporation, a small precision tool company, needed a new technology that would reinvent not only the company, but automotive technology as a whole. That's when they licensed German rotary engine technology. Their aim was to share information with the German automakers and prove to the world that a rotary engine technology could be successful. That is when Mazda Motor Corporation was born. The automotive industry was in for a surprise. Rough Start It was a rough start for Mazda. In the first hour after arrival, the prototype rotary engine seized. Mazda knew though, this was not the end. It was only the beginning. It was going to be a long road ahead for them, but they never relented. At the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, the Mazda Cosmo Sport 110S was introduced to the world. Three years later, on May 30, 1967, it went on sale. It was the world's very first production twin-rotor rotary engine car. The Cosmo was also Mazda's very first sports car. Only 1.176 production Cosmo Sports would be built. However, it's legacy would extend for years. Mazda never stopped improving their vehicles. Five Decades Later After fifty years, Mazda still remembers the early days, as they are still a very important part of what makes Mazda, well, Mazda. Even though they may not be employing the use of rotary engines, Mazda is still advancing technology that enables incomparable driver experiences. Beach Mazda understands this. We also strive to offer our Mazda owners exceptional experiences. Whether it's buying a new Mazda vehicle or in our service department, we want all of our customers to have no less than the best.
