In a recent press release, Mazda gave us a fantastic update about the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant. It is currently being built in Alabama. Keep reading to learn more! There are some pretty interesting facts inside. more On Schedule Mazda noted that despite poor weather, construction of the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing U.S.A., Inc plant is well underway. Team members there recently celebrated when the first steel column went up. It was a true milestone which they honored with a small gathering at the plant site. Construction at the site remains on schedule. “Today marks an exciting milestone for the MTMUS team and the state of Alabama,” said Masashi Aihara, president, MTMUS. “We are fully committed to this project and we can now see the beginning of our new campus taking shape. Soon, we will be proud to say ‘built in Alabama with pride.’” Fun Facts Some of the construction highlights include: 3.0 million cubic yards of dirt graded for site preparation. This is enough dirt to fill the Empire State Building twice! 150,000 cubic yards of gravel poured to create the plant foundation, equal to filling 46 Olympic-sized swimming pools. 2,500 construction workers projected to be on site by late summer 2019. The Mazda Toyota Manufacturing U.S.A, Inc (MTMUS) plant should bring approximately 4,000 new job openings to the Huntsville, Alabama area. Right now, the automakers are in the process of hiring professional staff and skilled positions. More job openings are set to be added during the summer months. Production should begin sometime late this year. About MTMUS Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, U.S.A. is a co-owned and operated automotive manufacturing plant. There is a wait list that is growing by the minute. “Our Miata fans are truly remarkable. It's important to realize these were the people who were instrumental in the original 1989 MX-5 Miata. There were also members of seven United States Miata clubs present. It’s been a while since we’ve written about Mazda Motorsports. We have some really exciting news to share with all of you! Olly Jarvis, the Number 77 Mazda RT24-P driver broke a long standing record at Daytona International Speedway! Keep reading to learn more! more Qualification Rounds During the qualification rounds at Daytona International Speedway for the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Olly Jarvis went around the track faster than any other car in history! Jarvis earned the pole position and broke a 26 year old course record for the 3.56 mile road course. How amazing is that? Record Time Jarvis broke the record on his fourth lap with a time of 1:33:685. That broke the record of 1:33:875. He held that time to the end of session. Jonathan Bomarito is the driver for the number 55 Castrol Mazda RT24-P. His time was 1:34:212 which earned him fourth position. Pole Position Jarvis’ time made this the first overall pole position in Mazda Motorsport history at the Rolex 24 in Daytona. It was also the first pole position in IMSA for Jarvis, as well as for the Mazda RT24-P. Beginning forty years ago with a 1-2 finish for the Mazda RX-7 in the GTU class, Mazda has earned 22 class wins. Ground was recently broken on the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, U.S.A. Inc. plant in Huntsville, Alabama. Keep reading for all the exciting news more Major Investment With a 1.6 billion investment from both companies, the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant is expected to create at least 4,000 new jobs. This plant will also have the ability to build 300,000 vehicles a year. This will begin in 2021. For starters, the new manufacturing plant will build Toyota’s Corolla. Its new 2020 model was recently made public in California. The new plant will also build Mazda’s yet- to-be-named crossover vehicle. “We are proud to be here with Toyota, with whom we share the bond of pride in manufacturing,” said Kiyotaka Shobuda, Mazda’s senior managing executive officer. “We are proud to be breaking ground on a new ‘home’ here in Huntsville – a city that believes in the possibilities of technology and manufacturing, and has striven to realize mankind’s greatest dream.” In the News According to a recent press release: The alliance will assure competitiveness in manufacturing. Mazda will develop two battery electric vehicles, one powered solely by battery and another that pairs a battery with a newly developed range extender powered by Mazda’s small, lightweight and exceptionally quiet rotary engine. The range extender will recharge the battery when necessary to effectively increase the vehicle’s driving range. The concept behind the rotary-powered range extender was to leverage the rotary engine’s small size and high power output to make multiple electrification technology solutions possible via a shared packaging layout. Taking advantage of the rotary engine’s compatibility with gaseous fuels, the rotary-powered range extender is designed to also burn liquefied petroleum gas and provide a source of electricity in emergencies.
