The future of powertrains is upon us. In fact, there’s a future Mazda to sport an innovative sparkless gas engine – the 2019 Mazda3. This model, slated for release in 2018, will feature the first-ever Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) technology, which has been in development for decades, but has yet to make its debut. Find out more about the first Mazda to sport this innovative sparkless gas engine. What is HCCI? Mazda is no stranger to developing innovative engines, as evidenced by its SKYACTIV™® technology, so its new HCCI technology should come as no surprise. HCCI engines function similarly to diesel engines. Engines with this new technology ignite without a spark thanks to compression, yet they run only on gasoline. Typically, gas engines rely on an ignition that sends electricity to spark plugs, which ignite fuel inside a combustion chamber. Efficiency is greatly enhanced and emissions reduced with HCCI engines, as a homogeneous mix of air and fuel burn at lower temperatures. In turn, this lessens the heat energy lost in typical gasoline engines. However, due to specific temperature needs for this technology to function properly, Mazda’s engine is said to incorporate sparkplug ignition capability, to be used as necessary when temperatures are too cold for the HCCI engine to start on its own. Mazda’s HCCI engine comes as part of the automaker’s next generation of SKYACTIV™ technology. Debut Details about Mazda’s HCCI technology will be revealed in the coming month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Rumor has it that Mazda will then introduce a concept of the redesigned Mazda3 in October at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Show. The new system will first hit the market in Australia, and drivers in the United States will likely have to wait until 2019 to access it, if Mazda decides to offer HHCI in the U.S. at all. The Mazda3 is currently the only car scheduled for HCCI engine use. Diesel Mazda CX-5 Last year, Mazda announced they were introducing a diesel model of the 2017 Mazda CX-5 for the second half of 2017. Well, we have arrived in the second half of the year and there's no word yet on when they will arrive. This will be Mazda's first diesel engine in the United states when it does arrive. more According to Car and Driver, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel could produce a segment leading fuel economy and performance. It's also possible that with the recent problems with Volkswagen's diesel vehicles, Mazda could gain a whole new group of buyers. This is a pretty interesting point of view. World's Most Beautiful Red It's unmistakable. That beautiful Mazda red color is called Soul Red Metallic. When a person thinks "Mazda" it's a given they are going to visualize their favorite model in that gorgeous red color. But, how can you improve on such a perfect color? Keep reading for details about the new color. more New Design Expert Keiichi Okamoto, a creative design expert, played a key role in the development of the original Soul Red Metallic and Machine Gray Metallic, colors that symbolize KODO Design. “I wanted to create the world’s most beautiful red,” Okamoto explained. “A color that people would viscerally feel was beautiful and that would immediately grab their attention. The CX-5 represents an evolution of the concept of ‘less is more’ that does not rely on character lines. This required a new red that would beautifully highlight the exquisite transitions in the body’s surfaces.” Amazing Team In this belief, Okamoto put together a task team comprising people from development and production along with representatives of suppliers. The team then set out to develop a new version of Soul Red. In developing the new Soul Red, Okamoto presented team members with the following three verbal images of what he felt was required of the new color: bright highlights bursting with powerful energy like that of flowing magma, shaded areas with a clear, translucent nature and a lustrous shine exhibiting fine detail and hardness. But these descriptions were not enough for the team to grasp the image of the ideal color that Okamoto was aiming to create. To help illustrate what he had in mind, he showed them a bright ruby-colored drinking glass. A Science to it This new color wasn't developed by chance. There was a science to it, of course. The commitment and passion each team member devoted to the project led to a variety of new technologies that defy conventional thinking and the creation of a newer red color with a translucent quality never before seen.

The team made small adjustments that resulted in a simpler surface and smoother lines. The result is what Mazda has described as "a variety of synergistic effects that create a cleaner look and an easier assembly process, all while reducing the pressure borne by the corners while driving." It's true that many of these improvement won't be noticed by drivers. But, the contribution to the appeal of Mazda vehicles will be. Drivers will feel it in the way their Mazda vehicle drives. They will notice it when they wash their vehicle or change a tire. Their vehicle will give them a certain something they may not be able to name, but they will know only Mazda has it.

Fifty Years It's been fifty years since a small Japanese automaker burst onto the scene with technology that everyone said could never happen. Keep reading for all the details about the 2017 Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car Championships! more 2017 Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car Championships The season is already half over for the 2017 Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car Championships. The Mazda team racers are off to a really strong start. Making its debut in the TCA class (Touring Car A) is the fourth generation MX-5 race car. Already it has achieved five wins in the first six races. All total, the Mazda team claimed 16 out of 18 podium positions thus far in the TCA class. They are also the leading drivers, team and manufacturers championships just after six of 12 races. Racing Teams Setting the pace are S.A.C Racing teammates Elivan Goulart and Matt Fassnacht. Dean Copeland from Copeland Motorsports and Eric Powell from Tech Sport Racing are quickly closing the gap. Having opened the season with an ideal birthday weekend at VIR, Fassnacht scored two pole positions and two wins. By doing that, he took the early points lead. After that, he scored a second and third places for a grand total of six podium finishes in the first six races. Goulart, who is the defending TCA Champion, completed races in second, fourth, second and second places before obtaining two wins at Lime Rock Park. He's also the points leader among all the racers. Copeland won at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Mazda recently announced that the 2017 Mazda CX-9 earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. This is the highest score that can be earned. The CX-9 is Mazda's mid-size, three row crossover. more Multiple Award Winner The CX-9, which has been on sale for just over a year, has earned many awards and much praise. In recent months, it was listed as a Car and Driver 10-Best Trucks and SUVs. It also earned a place on Ward's Automotive's 10-Best Interiors and 10-Best Engines list for this year. “The concepts of ‘self’ and ‘family,’ as well as ‘smart indulgence’ led the way for our engineers and designers to create their ideal midsize crossover SUV,” said Masashi Otsuka, VP of R&D and design, MNAO, who served as the CX-9’s program manager in his previous role with Mazda Motor Corporation in Hiroshima, Japan. “We wanted to create a vehicle that could delight couples or shuttle families with the same effortlessness. Now, we are proud to say that the IIHS has recognized CX-9 for its safety, highlighting the achievements of our engineering team.” The Mazda CX-9 earned high marks in collision and occupancy protection test. It earned the highest rating of "Good". The CX-9 also passed the IIHS's new headlight tests with its standard LED lightning. The CX-9's automatic emergency braking capabilities were also tested.
