Unveiling the Essence of Driving: Mazda's KODO Soul and Jinba Ittai

In the world of automobiles, some brands manage to carve a distinct niche for themselves by blending cutting-edge technology with an unwavering commitment to delivering an exceptional driving experience. Among these brands, Mazda stands out as a true enthusiast's choice, with its unique design philosophy known as "KODO Soul of Motion" and the driving concept called "Jinba Ittai." These two core principles form the heart and soul of Mazda's approach to crafting vehicles that resonate with drivers on a profound level. more KODO Soul of Motion: Artistry in Motion Mazda's design language, KODO Soul of Motion, is more than just a design philosophy – it's a manifestation of the brand's belief that a vehicle should embody the vitality and dynamism of a living creature. Inspired by the movements of animals in the wild, KODO seeks to capture a sense of motion even when the vehicle is at a standstill. The result is a lineup of Mazda vehicles that exude elegance, energy, and a sense of purpose. KODO design principles are not about creating overly complex or flashy exteriors. Instead, it emphasizes simplicity, balance, and a focus on essential elements. Sharp lines, sculpted surfaces, and a keen attention to proportions define the KODO philosophy. The goal is to create cars that invoke an emotional connection, not just by being visually appealing, but by conveying a feeling of anticipation and movement. Jinba Ittai: Horse and Rider as One While KODO captures the visual essence of Mazda vehicles, the Jinba Ittai concept is all about the driving experience itself. Translating to "horse and rider as one," Jinba Ittai encapsulates the idea that the connection between a driver and their vehicle should be seamless and intuitive, much like the bond between a skilled rider and a responsive horse. Mazda engineers and designers have worked tirelessly to create cars that respond to the driver's intentions with precision. This involves refining everything from the car's steering and handling to the feedback it provides through the pedals and controls. The goal is to create a harmonious synergy between the driver and the vehicle, allowing the driver to feel like they're an integral part of the car's performance. The Symbiotic Relationship The fascinating aspect of Mazda's approach is how KODO Soul of Motion and Jinba Ittai are interconnected. The expressive and dynamic designs resulting from KODO not only catch the eye but also set the stage for the emotional connection that Jinba Ittai aims to foster. The KODO design elicits a sense of movement even when stationary, and this same sense of movement is amplified when the car is in motion, reinforcing the feeling of being in sync with the vehicle. Furthermore, the KODO design also contributes to the practical aspects of Jinba Ittai. The visibility-enhancing design elements and ergonomic considerations ensure that the driver feels more connected to the road and surroundings, further enhancing the driving experience. Driving Beyond Utility In a world where cars are often perceived as mere modes of transportation, Mazda's KODO Soul of Motion and Jinba Ittai concepts remind us that driving can be an artful and immersive experience. They underline the idea that vehicles can evoke emotions, inspire connections, and offer a form of engagement that goes beyond mere utility. For those who have the privilege of driving a Mazda, the marriage of these two principles transforms the act of driving from a mundane task into a journey of discovery and connection. With KODO Soul of Motion, Mazda designs vehicles that spark emotion even before the engine roars to life, and with Jinba Ittai, the driving experience becomes a captivating symphony of control and responsiveness. In an automotive landscape that is constantly evolving, Mazda's steadfast commitment to KODO Soul of Motion and Jinba Ittai reminds us that the essence of driving is not just about reaching a destination, but about savoring every moment of the journey.

Why Chose Mazda? Here's Why!

Why choose Mazda? Keep reading to find out! more A Heightened State of Driving Have you ever thought about the way your car makes you feel? Does it make you feel anything at all? Or is it just a piece of sheet metal? Simply a way to get you from A to B? We believe a car should stir the emotions. It should make your heart race before you even get behind the wheel. This is our mantra: Make cars that make driving matter. That’s why we build every Mazda to inspire, excite and most of all – bring people joy. This philosophy guides everything we do. From technology, to design, to safety. Our cars are built by insightful craftsmen and detail-obsessed engineers who want to elevate your state of being every time you get behind the wheel. The Strength of the Human Spirit Mazda’s home city of Hiroshima is known for its incredible challenger spirit. Like a phoenix rising, the people of Hiroshima rebuilt their beloved city from the ground up. This strength is what pushes us to prevail against all odds. It’s what inspires us to be more nimble, strategic and most of all – creative. And it’s ultimately what led us to mass-produce the rotary engine and win the 24 Hours of Le Mans when nobody believed we could. This silent strength is what fuels us to keep challenging the status quo, each and every day. The Birth of Our Rotary Engine When Mazda set out to develop a flawless rotary engine in 1961, it was just a distant pipe dream for other automakers. Our tenacious engineers fought through a number of setbacks like chatter marks on the inner walls of the rotor housing. Ultimately, they conquered these so-called “nail marks of the devil” with high-strength carbon infused seals. The labor of love paid off when they successfully introduced the Cosmo Sport, the world’s first volume production sports car powered by a rotary engine. The Debut of the Iconic Roadster In true Mazda fashion, one passionate engineer dared to be different. At a time when the lightweight sports car segment was all but extinct, Kenichi Yamamoto led the development of the first generation Mazda MX-5 Miata. He and his team had one mission: Build a lightweight sports car that’s a pure joy to drive. They stopped at nothing to reach this goal, even incurring extra costs to achieve the agility they were after. In the end, every ounce of effort was worth it. They created a fan favorite, with more than a million Miatas on the road today. A Holistic Approach to Driving We believe vehicles should be engineered to maximize driving dynamics and efficiency: from body construction and engine technology, to the chassis and transmission. So we developed our innovative Mazda SKYACTIV ® TECHNOLOGY to give you the most out of every mile without ever compromising performance. It’s just one of the ways Mazda makes driving better. Imagining the Unimagined This is the very question our designers ask themselves when they stare at a blank page. At inception, anything is possible. They have the power to craft true works of art like the Takeri, Shinari, or Mazda’s latest concept vehicle, the RX-VISION. Although these vehicles are strictly vision cars and not available for purchase, they’re a visual demonstration of how Mazda KODO: “Soul of Motion” design is evolving.

Fifty Years

Fifty Years of Mazda History: Revolutionary Technology

Fifty Years It's been fifty years since a small Japanese automaker burst onto the scene with technology that everyone said could never happen. Mazda Motor Corporation, then called Toyo Kogyo Corporation, knew their new technology would be revolutionary. It had to be. more Toyo Kogyo Corporation The Toyo Kogyo Corporation, a small precision tool company, needed a new technology that would reinvent not only the company, but automotive technology as a whole. That's when they licensed German rotary engine technology. Their aim was to share information with the German automakers and prove to the world that a rotary engine technology could be successful. That is when Mazda Motor Corporation was born. The automotive industry was in for a surprise. Rough Start It was a rough start for Mazda. In the first hour after arrival, the prototype rotary engine seized. Mazda knew though, this was not the end. It was only the beginning. It was going to be a long road ahead for them, but they never relented. At the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, the Mazda Cosmo Sport 110S was introduced to the world. Three years later, on May 30, 1967, it went on sale. It was the world's very first production twin-rotor rotary engine car. The Cosmo was also Mazda's very first sports car. Only 1.176 production Cosmo Sports would be built. However, it's legacy would extend for years. Mazda never stopped improving their vehicles. Five Decades Later After fifty years, Mazda still remembers the early days, as they are still a very important part of what makes Mazda, well, Mazda. Even though they may not be employing the use of rotary engines, Mazda is still advancing technology that enables incomparable driver experiences. Beach Mazda understands this. We also strive to offer our Mazda owners exceptional experiences. Whether it's buying a new Mazda vehicle or in our service department, we want all of our customers to have no less than the best. If you're not familiar with Beach Mazda, stop by today. You'll be pleased you did.

Now, the one millionth MX-5 Miata has return to Mazda headquarters in Hiroshima after its year-long globe circling tour. more Celebration The one millionth Mazda MX-5 Miata is a commemorative model that celebrates the production of 1 million units of the iconic sports car. During the tour, the vehicle was displayed at more than thirty events in Japan, Germany, Spain, Canada and the United States among others. Thousands of MX-5 fans signed their names on the bodywork. In the United States alone, the “Millionth Miata Celebration Tour” made 18 stops between August and November of last year. “Seeing so many signatures from all over the world really brought home the fact that people from different countries, cultures and generations have supported the MX-5 for more than a quarter of a century,” said Masashi Nakayama, Program Manager and Chief Designer of the fourth-generation MX-5. “We are forever grateful to these fans, and we will continue working to elevate this car, a symbol of Mazda’s dedication to driving pleasure, to the realm of high culture as we set our sights on the next milestone – 2 million units.” On Display Upon returning to Japan, the One Millionth Miata took part in the Hiroshima Flower Festival parade that was held on May third. It then sat on display in Mazda’s headquarters for five days. We have to agree, this is some pretty special news. Jinba Ittai

Jinba Ittai - What does it mean to you?

Have you heard of Jinba Ittai? It’s something special, that’s for sure. Keep reading to learn about Jinba Ittai. more Just like the connection of a horse and its rider, so too, should be the connection of a car and its driver. It’s the taking of the reigns, or the steering wheel, and knowing that’s where you need to be. It’s the absolute knowledge that the ride you’re about to take will be the ride of your lifetime. Mazda understands the relationship between man and car. There has to be a connection between the two. If the car isn’t comfortable or if the car isn’t fun to drive, that connection will be missing. The Concept The concept of Jinba Ittai is not new. It has its origins of early Japanese archery called Yabusame. As early as 300 A.D., archers would take their bows, mount their horses for honor, battle or entertainment. Today, Mazda has used the same concept when designing the MX-5 Miata. Designers always kept the idea of oneness in their minds. This is why the MX-5 Miata is so perfect to drive. It feels as though it is a natural extension of your being. “When the car and driver are in perfect harmony,” Kijima said, “driving is fun.” A horse and rider communicate through tactile response. The horse adjusts its gait to allow the archer to release his arrow. Kijima explains that Mazda aimed to create the same relationship between car and driver. Effect on You The MX-5 Miata puts the driver into the best body position to drive the car. Not only does this natural position make the car fun to drive, it also keeps the driver safe. Beach Mazda thinks you should come feel it for yourself. Until you get behind the wheel of a new or used MX-5 Miata, you’ll never fully understand the power behind Jinba Ittai. Give Beach Mazda a call today and we’ll show you how driving matters.

50-50

50-50 Weight Ratio - Mazda MX-5 Miata

Driving Matters Because Driving Matters to Mazda, even the most obsessive focus on engineering excellence is never enough. more That’s why, after 26 years, our engineers remain passionate about things like the MX-5 Miata’s near perfect  50-50 ratio front-to-rear weight distribution. The quality-obsessed team that imagined and built the latest 2016 MX-5 Miata held fast to one simple philosophy. They preserve and innovate the front-midship engine and rear-wheel drive layout. Sustaining the deep rooted belief that the MX-5 is not perfectly balanced until you, the driver, are literally sitting in the driver’s seat. Mazda knows that the best engineering obeys the laws of physics. Mazda engineers continue to stay true to this principle. They succeed by reducing weight in their vehicles. By doing this, Mazda created a nearly perfect 50-50 balance in the new MX-5 Miata. By using a remarkably sensitive balance, Mazda could put their car to the test. They wanted to learn if all of their hard work had paid off. Unbelievably, the 2,332 pound MX-5 Miata, remained perfectly balanced on the balance beam. This is with the driver planted firmly in the driver's seat. Best Selling Roadster The MX-5 Miata has been the best-selling roadster for years. Throughout the years, the weight of the vehicle has contributed to it’s thrilling driving experience. We'd have to agree! Other multi-generational vehicles in production have become bigger and stagnant. Mazda’s fourth generation MX-5 has remained slim and agile. Mazda included all the safety features and modern conveniences over the evolution of the model. The MX-5 Miata constantly reminds us that multi-generational vehicles do not have to become stuffy and static. The new MX-5 Miata features an aluminum hood and trunk. The front and rear bumpers and front fenders are also aluminum. These help to keep the MX-5 Miata energetic and lighter. This is compared to using other materials. The utilization of SKYACTIV™ technology into this generation of the MX-5 Miata is also a major contributor of increased fuel efficiency. There's also been a decrease in overall vehicle weight. Keeping the MX-5 at a 50-50 ratio weight balance allows the driver to have a smoother and more connected experience only adding to the fundamental freedom the driver has behind the wheel of a Mazda. Why we Love the 50-50 Ratio Beach Mazda knows how exhilarating driving the MX-5 Miata can be. That’s why we love to sell them! We want everyone to see for themselves.
