- A replacement battery on hand (CR2025 battery)
- Your Mazda key fob
- A small flat head screwdriver with the head wrapped in tape to prevent scratches
Opening Your Mazda Key Fob
Whether you have a Mazda6 key fob or Mazda CX-5 key fob, learning this process can help you open your Mazda key fob when the battery dies. Follow these simple steps to reveal the battery:
- Press the auxiliary key button on the back of your key fob in order to remove the metal auxiliary key
- With the metal key gone, you’ll notice a slot on either side of the key fob case.
- Use the tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver to pry open the case, first on one side, and then on the other. Work gently.
- This should remove the case. Place the latter in an easily-visible spot where you won’t lose track of it.
Replacing Your Mazda Key Battery
Once your Mazda key fob is open, remove and replace the Mazda key battery when you follow these instructions. This process should only take a moment:
- Remove the battery cap, and set it next to your key fob case.
- Your Mazda key fob battery should be fully exposed. Remove it, being careful not to damage the small rubber ring that it sits upon.
- If you scratched or damaged the rubber ring, it’s important to replace this component before moving on.
- With the ring in place, take your new replacement battery and set it in its place in the key fob. The positive (+) side should be up, facing you.
- Return the battery cover to its proper place, and then reattach both sides of the key fob case. Press until you hear them click into place.

Mazda3 Maintenance Schedule
These maintenance schedules differ based on the model and whether you set the “Oil Change” maintenance monitor to “Flexible” or “Fixed”. All that this setting changes is the frequency at which you should check certain elements.
- Normal Driving Conditions
- Every Year: inspect your disc brakes
- Every Two Years: inspect fuel lines/hoses, inspect brake lines/hoses/connections, inspect steering operation, inspect front and rear suspension, inspect driveshaft dust boost, and tighten the bolts and nuts in the chassis and body
- Every Three Years: inspect the drive belts
- Every Four Years: inspect the hoses and tubes for emission and exhaust system and heat shields
- On a “Flexible” oil change monitor setting: replace oil when the wrench indicator is ON. At this time, you should also replace the air filter and cabin air filter. Max interval is 12 months / 10,000 miles
- On a “Fixed” oil change monitor setting: replace the oil every 6 months, replace the air filter at 30 months and the cabin air filter every two years
- Replace engine coolant at 120,000 miles / 10 years or 60,000 miles / 4 years depending on coolant type. After the first replacement, change at 60,000 miles / 5 years and 60,000 miles / 4 years, respectively.
- Replace spark plugs at 75,000 miles and rotate tires at 5,000 miles
Mazda6 Maintenance Schedule
- Normal Driving Conditions
- Follow the Mazda3 schedule for yearly, bi-yearly, and three year maintenance needs
- Every Four Years: Inspect hoses and tubes for emission
- Every Five Years: Inspect the exhaust system and heat shields
- Replace air filter every three years
- Replace engine oil and filter when wrench indicator light is ON. Max interval is 12 months / 7,500 miles
- Replace engine coolant at 120,000 miles / 10 years, and at 60,000 miles / 5 years after the first replacement
- Replace cabin air filter every two years
- Replace spark plugs with SKYACTIV®-G 2.5 every 75,000 miles, and every 40,000 miles with SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T
- Rotate tires every 7,500 miles
- Inspect emergency flat tire repair kit annually if installed
- If submerged in water, replace rear differential and transfer oil annually

- Follow the Mazda6 schedule, with few variations
