Interior: CX-9 Wins 2017 Wards 10-Best!

Did you know the CX-9 recently won a spot on the prestigious list of Wards 10 Best Engines Award? Now, Mazda’s designers get to join the engineering team with another accolade of their own. The CX-9 has earned a 2017 Wards 10 Best Interiors award.

The Beginning

“We designed Mazda CX-9’s interior from the onset with a concept of ‘Smart Indulgence,’ recognizing that there’s a balance between needs and wants,” said Julien Montousse, director of design, Mazda Design Americas, who personally led the design of CX-9’s interior. “Our goal was to maximize both functionality for families and opulence for couples looking for a getaway.

“We’re thankful that WardsAuto recognized CX-9 as a ’10 Best Interiors’ winner, as it speaks to the success of our fledgling ‘Mazda Premium’ brand focus and the evolution of our KODO—Soul of Motion design language.”

2nd Generation

The second-generation CX-9 went on sale in May 2016. It launched Mazda’s new top-tier Signature trim level. This trim level features LED interior accent lighting and Auburn Nappa leather seating surfaces. It also offers rosewood sourced from premium guitar-maker Fujigen and aluminum trim.

While most crossover SUVs see the majority of their sales in mid-tier trim levels, CX-9 buyers have overwhelmingly opted for top-trim CX-9 Grand Touring and Signature models—about 60 percent of model mix. Additionally, CX-9 has brought in new buyers that often come from premium or luxury nameplates.

WardsAuto Senior Editor Tom Murphy said customers picking the upper trim levels of the new CX-9 is no surprise.

“Our Signature test model arrived fully loaded with the beautiful rosewood and aluminum trim, rich two-tone leather and all the creature comforts we could want, for under $46,000,” Murphy said. “This is the kind of upscale versatility that makes utility vehicles so popular in America.”
